Race Summary

HIGH FLY stalked the pace into the far turn, rallied to gain a slim lead just past the quarter pole, edged away from B. B. BEST at the sixteenth pole, then was fully extended to hold BANDINI safe. The latter, stalked the pace three wide, was outmoved by the winner in the stretch, then responded to pressure and was gaining on that rival late. B. B. BEST quickly moved to the fore, set the pace along the inside, responded when headed by HIGH FLY leaving the far turn, then gave way grudgingly in the final sixteenth. PAPI CHULLO unhurried after being squeezed back from between rivals soon after the start, swung out for the stretch run while moving into contention but couldn't gain late. WILD DESERT outrun after being knocked sideways at the start, improved his position in the drive. PARK AVENUE BALL reserved in striking position after bumping with GENERAL JOHN B racing into the first turn, tired leaving the far turn. DEFER well placed in behind the leaders, raced three wide on the far turn and faltered. GENERAL JOHN B bumped with PARK AVENUE BALL entering the first turn, tracked the pace along the inside into the far turn, then faded. NATURAL PHENOMENON bumped soundly with WILD DESERT at the start, was through after a half mile and eased in the stretch run.
